Pacific Perspective:Soldiers of the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division Deployed to Remote Island for Force Protetcion

Last week,a combined force of 11 Russian and Chinese warships operated together off the coast of Alaska's Aleutian Islands,according to U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM).The combined force was larger than one the two US adversaries sent through the Bering Sea last September,which had seven warships,four Russian and three Chinese.These were detected by the US Coast Guard Legend-class national security cutter Kimball (WMSL 756).As capable as the Kimball is,it was deemed to be an inadequate response.Hence four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers were assigned to escort the adversary vessels this time. On 21 September 2021,the AUKUS Defence Alliance was established by President Joseph R. Biden and then Prime Ministers Boris Johnson of the UK and Scott Morrison of Australia.The Alliance was founded to enhance the collective security of the signatories in the Indo-Pacific Region.It provided for the sharing of nuclear propulsion information with Australia by the UK and the US for the purpose of enabling Australia to procure and operate nuclear powered fast attack submarines;the development of hypersonic and counter-hypersonic technologies;as well as cyber capabilities including Artificial Intelligence;quantum technologies;and additional undersea capabilities.* A major step in the nuclear propulsion sharing activity has been inititiated with the education and graduation of three Royal Australian Navy (RAN) officers from Naval Nuclear Power Training Command and Nuclear Power School in Charleston,South Carolina.They have taken an important step toward becoming qualified to operate naval nuclear reactors on submarines and aircraft carriers.Graduating were RAN officers Lt.Cmdr.James Heydon,Lt.Cmdr.Adam Klyne,and Lt.William Hall.They will continue their education on the Navy's moored training ship,and then in Connecticut more training for qualification as officers aboard Virginia-class nuclear powered fast attack submarines.Australia intends to procure at least three of the Virginia-class submarines,with an option for two more.The Virginia-class submarines will fill the gap left by Australia's retirement of its Collins-class diesel-electric submarines.The US and the UK will also design the SSN(R) nuclear powered fast attack submarine for the RAN.* The Virginia-class submarines are built by a partnership of Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat.* Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII),General Dynamics (GD)

New Aircraft Carrier USS Gerald R Ford Set For First Full Deployment

The Ford-class aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford (CVN 77) has successfully completed its Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPUTEX) off the East Coast and is to be deployed on its first full-length deployment (at least six months) in the first week of May.Accompanied by Carrier Strike Group 12 and embarking Carrier Air Wing 8,it will depart its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk,Virginia.The Ford had been deployed to Europe in September 2022 on its first mission,integrating with other NATO warships for a bit less than two months.Rear Admiral Gregory Huffman commands CSG 12 and Captain Paul Lanzilotta is commanding the Ford.* CSG 12 includes the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normany (CG 60) and Destroyer Squadron 2 (DESRON 2).DESRON 2 consists of Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Ramage (DDG 61);USS McFaul (DDG 74);and USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116).An undisclosed nuclear-powered attack submarine customarily accompanies a CSG.The next member of the Ford-class is currently in testing,the Pre-Commissioning Unit John F Kennedy (CVN 79).She was christened by the ship's sponsor,the late president's daughter Caroline,and delivery is expected in 2025.The Ford-class features 23 new technologies,some of them with a view to increasing sortie rates by 30%.These innovations include a dual-band radar custom-designed for the class,providing unprecedented ability to find and track targets and to compress combat data into a single stream;a faster aircraft elevator;the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS);and the Advanced Arresting Gear.The deployment will mark the first time the full Carrier Air Wing 8 will deploy with the Ford.In 2022,only 80% of the CAW deployed to Europe with the Ford.So one of the missions this time will be comprehensively testing the limits of the sortie-generation capability of the Ford-class.* In a previous iteration,CSG 12 had supported both the Afghan War and the Iraq War,flying more than 13,000 combat missions.Having completed the COMPUTEX,the Ford is now certified for integration with CSG 12 and conducting combat operations.Said Rear Admiral Huffman:COMPUTEX serves as a doctorate-level test of the strike group's ability to operate collectively across the spectrum of warfare,while incorporating the Gerald R Ford into the strike group.* The carrier will be ready to provide maritime security,power projection or strike operations.Captain Brian Metcalf,program manager for the Ford-class,said that he fully believes the aircraft carrier,her air wing,and her battle group are capable of defending themselves.* No one has revealed the Ford's destination,but,as a member of US 2nd Fleet,the Atlantic Fleet,it would be logical to deploy her back to Europe,as there is currently no US Navy CSG in theatre to anchor NATO's response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine,bolstering deterrence alongside NATO Allies and Partners.

NATO Exercise Dynamic Manta 2023 began on 27 February and continues through 10 March.It provides complex and challenging maritime warfighting training to all nine participating Allies:Canada,France,Germany,Greece,Italy,Spain,Turkiye,the UK and the US.The techniques,tactics and procedures (TTPs) emphasise anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and surface warfare in the context of Anti-Access/Area Denial operations in the Central Mediterranean Sea.The drills are meant to shape a collectively trained and interoperable force ready to operate as the maritime component of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF).According to NATO,its maritime power relies on the capability to combine NATO Standing Forces with high capability national forces to deliver effects whenever and wherever needed.In this iteration of the exercise,Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2) provides surface warfare assets. The US Marine Corps is developing a new approach to its Pacific deployments called the Marine Littoral Regiment (MLR).It has already founded the first MLR in Hawaii.Next,the concept will be realised on the Japanese island of Okinawa.The Corps will transform its Okinawa presence without increasing its numbers there.MLRs contain about 2,000 Marines and US Navy Sailors,including a Combat Team.It is a self-deployable,multi-domain force that persistently operates across the competitive continuum in support of the Joint Force,assuring Allies and Partners;deterring adversaries;conducting and enabling Joint Force contact,blunt and surge activities.The MLR is a naval formation with capabilities to manoeuvre and operate in the maritme domain.It is mobile,low-signature and persistent in the contact to blunt layers and relatively easy to maintain and sustain as part of a naval expeditionary force.* The MLR leverages the full capabiltity of amphibious platforms,connectors and boats.Together,the Navy and Marine Corps will field a Light Amphibious Warship to enhance its mobility and sustainment.The MLR contains a Littoral Combat Team;Littoral Anti-Air Battalion;and Combat Logistics Battalion.So the MLR contains an infantry battalion and an anti-ship missile battery.It facilitates the deployment of multiple platoon-reinforced size expeditionary advanced base sites for long-range anti-ship fires;forward arming and refueling of aircraft;Intelligence,Surveillance and Reconnaissance of key maritime terrain;plus air defence and early warning.After Okinawa,a third MLR is being contemplated for the US militarised coral reef of Guam.An MLR is commanded by a colonel.* The new concept was agreed with Japan at the recent Security Consultative Talks (SCT) in Washington on 12 January 2023.The talks,hosted by the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken for Japan's Foreign Minister,Hagashi Yosimasu,and Defence Minister,Hamada Yasukazu.The SCT deepened an already close relationship in the context of a more assertive China;Russia's second invasion of Ukraine;and North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and delivery systems.Said SecDef Austin: It is a shared committment to uphold the rules-based international order and to strengthen resilient partnerships around the globe.* Thus the US will forward-station the more versatile,mobile and resilient MLR.It bolsters deterrence and allows us to defend Japan and its people more effectively,according to Austin.The Marine 12th Artillery Regiment will remain in Japan and be re-organised into the 12th Marine Littoral Regiment by 2025.The transformed Regiment will be relevant to both current and future threat environments.At the same time,Japan has committed to acquire a counter-strike capability.* Furthermore,the SCT agreed that an attack to,from or within outer space would enable the invocation of Article V of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty.Article V states: Each Party recognizes an armed attack against either Party in the territories under the administration of Japan would be dangerous to its own security and declares that it would act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional procedures and processes.* The SCT agreed Japan will establish a permanent joint headquarters and will work with the U.S. on command-and-control arrangements with an emphasis on interoperability with U.S. Forces.Joint/shared use of facilities in Japan will be initiated,as will increased exercises,including exercises in Japan's Southwest Islands.Activities with regional Allies and Partners such as Australia,South Korea and India are to be strengthened,while also welcoming greater International Partner engagement by Euro-Atlantic Partners.*

Pacific Perspective:1st MARDIV Certifies for Australia Deployment

Marines and Sailors of 1st Marine Division and Expeditionary Strike Group 3 recently concluded Exercise Steel Knight 23.It certified the participants for deployment with the upcoming Marine Rotational Force-Darwin (MRF-D) in Australia's Northern Territory as I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF).Thousands of Marines and Sailors enhanced naval integration,joint planning and expeditionary advanced base operations.The drills took place in two phases:a command post exercise (CPX) and a mission rehearsal exercise (MRX).In the CRX,each subordinate command was tested to collect intelligence on enemy forces;coordinate joint fires;and simulate strikes while sustaining the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with supplies across dispersed locations.CPX also enabled all-domain operations including cyber,space and information operations to complement kinetic operations in the operational environment.* MRX involved manoeuvring warships,Marine aviation squadrons and staging amphibious landings.Marines and Sailors responded to simulated crises and contingency scenarios in a contested environment.Said USN Rear Admiral James Kirk,commander,Expeditionary Strike Group 3:Simulated combat operations are ongoing to execute sea denial operations so that the joint force can then control and have freedom of movement,and can manoeuvre in a combat scenario to refine operational capabilities and tactics,techniques and procedures (TTPs).* Marines and Sailors also rehearsed the EABO (Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations),meaning employing forces in isolated environments and contested maritime areas.They tested their ability to plan,communicate and operate on small island chains;sea lanes;and aboard ships scattered across vast areas while still synchronised with one another.This took place across multiple locales in Southern and Central California.It's about working together to gain an advantage over a very challenging adversary (such as China,Russia or North Korea) while outpacing an enemy and achieving sea control,according to USMC Major General Benjamin Watson,commanding general of 1st MARDIV,I MEF and Rear Admiral Kirk.* In the course of the exercise,America-class Amphibious Assault Ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) played a significant role,as did Marine Aircraft Group 3,3rd Marine Aircraft Wing,which conducted an air assault on San Clemente island,California.A US Navy landing craft air cushion with Assault Craft Unit 5 carried an AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task-Oriented Radar.* The Tripoli allows the operation of both the MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter.The warship is armed with 2 Rolling Airframe Missile launchers;2 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile launchers;2x20mm Phalanx CIWS mounts;and 7 x twin .50 BMG machine guns.It also carries electronic warfare devices such as 2 Mk53 Nulka decoy launchers.The Tripoli's complement is 102 officers;1102 enlisted;and 1687 Marines (plus 184 surge).It is the second America-class AAS,commissioned in July 2020.Its homeport is San Diego.*

NATO Vigilance Activity Neptune Strike 2022 (NEST 22.2) began on 14 October and was to have lasted 12 days.Actually,it was still active as of 28 October.NEST 22.2 was overseen by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) from its headquarters in Oeiras,Portugal.The focal point of the activity was the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (CSG 10) and its integration with NATO Allies and Partners while under NATO command.This enabled the CSG to deliver effects in NATO Joint Operating Areas (JOAs) Allied Joint Forces Command (JFC) Naples,Italy and JFC Brunssum,the Netherlands,projecting Alliance cohesion through simultaneous operations in European waters.Commands throughout the Alliance came together to plan and execute all-domain real world Vigilance Activities,demonstrating NATO'S power and capability.Said Vice Admiral Thomas Ishee,commander U.S. 6th Fleet and STRIKFORNATO: The Neptune series is a tangible demonstration of the power and capability of the NATO Alliance in all-domain operations.Neptune Strike 22.2 is a prime example of NATO'S ability to integrate high-end maritime warfare capabilities of an Allied Carrier Strike Group,ensuring our collective capability to deter and defend.* NATO observed that,within the framework of Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area (DDA),the Vigilance Activity improved interoperability of the CSG with STRIKFORNATO;Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE);and the wider Alliance and Partners.It also generated effects in the maritime,air and land domains,providing deterrence and reassurance while offering powerful opportunities for Allied interoperability.It proves the power and cohesion of the NATO Alliance,according to Royal Navy Rear Admiral James Morely,deputy commander,STRIKFORNATO.Such Vigilance Activities ensure the appropriate strategic awareness and force readiness required to sustain the peace.* Added Rear Admiral Dennis Valdez,CSG 10 commander: The teamwork,trust and combat readiness built through these events are our competitive advantage.* As of 28 October,the CSG was transiting the Adriatic Sea,which separates Italy from Southeast Europe,during NEST 22.2.The CSG is an integrated combat weapons system that delivers superior combat capability to deter,and if necessary,defeat our adversaries in support of national security.Indeed,the Spanish frigate ESPS Cristobal Colon (F105) accompanied the CSG during its Adriatic transit,and Rear Admiral Michael Sciretta,commander,Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) flew aboard an E/A-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft from the USS George H.W. Bush.Lieutenant Commander Sean Delaney of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 40 had given Rear Admiral Sciretta a safety check before the two-seater aircraft's flight.* Allies and Partners taking part in NEST 22.2 included Albania;Canada;Croatia;Finland;France;Germany;Greece;Hungary;Italy;Lithuania;North Macedonia;Poland;Romania;Spain;Slovakia;Sweden;Turkey;the UK and the US with more than 80 aircraft;14 ships;and around 6,000 personnel.US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets conducted patrols over Romania,which has a border with Ukraine,with Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornets.During a live-fire drill,Sailors from Team Jackpot,that is,Carrier Air Wing SEVEN (CVW-7),fired 50-caliber and M240B machine guns from the George H.W. Bush.Team Jackpot was also very pleased to meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg,who mingled with them during his visit to the CSG on 25 October 2022.*
