Allied Reaction:NATO's Newest Force

On 29 September 2023,the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA) was announced as the interim headquarters for the Alliance's new Allied Reaction Force (ARF),NATO announced in a press release.ARF was established at the NATO Vilnius Summit in July 2023.The NRDC-ITA will provide Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Christopher G. Cavoli,U.S. Army,with immediate capability to respond to a crisis,while also providing for the development of permanent ARF structures.The ARF will be a new,muti-domain Force for providing more options to respond swiftly to threats and crises in all directions throughout Alliance territory.Said NRDC-ITA commander Lt.Gen.Lorenzo D'Addario:I am excited and honoured to serve the Alliance in such a crucial role.We will be training hard to provide NATO a ready Force.* For the remainder of 2023 and early 2024,NRDC-ITA will undergo a rigorous series of measures:military exercises;academic studies;staff training;and the exercise Steadfast Deterrence in May 2024.Then NRDC-ITA will receive validation as an interim HQ before officially assuming the role in July 2024.This new role will strengthen the Corps' extant relationships,while allowing it to work with new Allies and Partners,sharing expertise and experience while demonstrating cohesion and legitimacy.The selection of NRDC-ITA as the interim HQ reaffirms Italy's commitment to the Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area,NATO said.* For its part,the UK has already pledged forces to the ARF.The ARF is part of the Alliance's New Force Model,which will support modernisation and strengthening of the NATO Force Structure.This in turn will ensure declared capabilities,equipment and forces are available to SACEUR in the right place at the right time.The agile,multi-domain and combat-credible ARF will be able to deploy at very high readiness to respond to a range of crises,the UK Ministry of Defence pointed out,in light of Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine.Contribution of fighter aircraft,land forces and maritime vessels to the New Force Model will protect people across the Alliance against future threats,the UK MOD stated.

NATO Approves Nomination of General Christopher G. Cavoli

On 3 May 2022,NATO announced that the North Atlantic Council has approved President Joeseph R. Biden's nomination of US Army General Christopher G. Cavoli as the next Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR),a post first held by General Dwight D. Eisenhower.General Cavoli will also be the Commander of U.S. European Command (EUCOM).He is currently the Commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa.Pending confirmation by the U.S. Senate,he will succeed US Air Force General Tod D. Wolters and will take up his appointment at a change of command ceremony at Supreme Allied Command Headquarters in Mons,Belgium this summer.* General Cavoli was commissioned as an Infantry Officer from Princeton University's ROTC program in 1987.A veteran of the Gulf War and the War in Afghanistan,he assumed command of U.S. Army Europe (USAEUR) as a Lieutenant General in 2018.When Africa was added to the command,General Cavoli was promoted to four star rank in 2020 and continued his service in Europe.* The son of an Italian-American US Army officer,he was born during the Cold War period in Wurzburg,West Germany.He is an Eurasia Foreign Area Officer,having graduated from Yale with an MA in Russian and East European Studies in 1997.He went on to be the Director for Russia on the Joint Staff Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate.* General Cavoli was Commander of 1st Battalion,32nd Infantry Regiment of 3rd Brigade Combat Team,10th Mountain Division.1st Battalion deployed to Kunar Province,Afghanistan in 2006.He then commanded 3rd BCT,1st Armored Division and was Deputy Commander,Regional Command West in Herat,Afghanistan.* General Cavoli speaks French,Italian and Russian.His awards and decorations include the Army Distinguished Service Medal;the Legion of Merit (3);the Bronze Star Medal (2);the Joint Meritorious Unit Award;the Kuwait Liberation Medal;and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three service stars.He is married and the father of two children.*

U.S. Army Europe and Africa:Stryker Troop to Hungary;Commander Visits Romania

On 18 February 2022,US Army Europe announced in a press release that it is deploying a Stryker troop to Hungary.Reportedly 150-200 Soldiers will deploy for drills with the very accomplished Hungarian Defence Forces.The drills are rooted in the Letter of Arrangement concerning combined training with the Hungarian Ministry of Defence signed in 2019 and reaffirmed in 2021.They will help ensure our readiness and interoperabilty as NATO Allies,U.S. Army Europe and Africa said.* The Stryker troop is part of US Army's 2nd Cavalry Regiment,which is a mounted infantry unit based in Germany.It specialises in deployment on short order and quick movement once deployed.The forward presence by 2nd Cav builds interoperability,trust and our shared commitment to NATO with Allied Soldiers.* On 16 February,the Commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa,General Christopher G. Cavoli,visited US and Romanian Soldiers at Mihail Kogalniceanu Airbase,Romania.About 1,000 US Soldiers from 2nd Cav are deployed there with their Stryker Armored Fighting Vehicles at the invitation of Romania to serve as part of our enhanced vigilance activities to strengthen our readiness and preserve miltary equilibrium from a force posture perspective.The Romanian Soldiers are led by Major General Iulian Berdila,Chief Romania Land Forces,whom General Cavoli greeted at the air base.* Both deployments come at a time of unprecedented tension in recent times.It is caused by Russia's belligerence toward its neighbour Ukraine by deploying up to 190,000 troops along Ukraine's borders.* The Stryker Armored Fighting Vehicle comes in several versions.It is built by General Dynamics Land Systems and is based on a design for the Canadian Armed Forces,the LAV III light armoured vehicle.* General Dynamics (GD)
